I'm an eCycle Best Green Guardian!

A couple of weeks ago a lovely man from eCycle contacted me with some interview questions, asking to feature me as a Green Guardian on the eCycle Best Blog.

I was glad to be asked, and excited when the article went live a couple of days ago!

You can check it out here, if you're interested.

There are lot's of other Green Guardians on the eCycle blog, so I'm in good company and I've found lots of new blogs to read too!

My Green Bag Lady Bag...

A week or two ago I entered a competition on The Green Bag Lady blog...I didn't win the competion, but I was sent a lovely, pink reusable shopping bag!  So far the Green Bag Lady has given away 16,274 fabric shopping bags, free, in exchange for the promise to stop using plastic ones.  My pink bag is great, not only because it is pink which is my most favoritest colour, but it's also got nice short handles, excellent for short arses like myself who end up dragging long handled bags along the floor if we're not careful!  It's also flowery! Yey!

Do you have a green bag lady bag?? She's having a give away on her blog that ends today, winners get a lovely set of bags, any one else who hasn't already got a free bag will be sent one, what are you waiting for??!

New favourite websites...

This month I've been mostly surfing...

http://www.vegetable-garden-guide.com/
which seems to have instructions to grow and care for any sort of veg you might like to grow. ever! Very useful for me at the moment!

http://zerowasteshopping.com/
from the people who brought you My Zero Waste, this is an excellent resource for finding out where you can buy products with minimal, or recyclable packaging. If you join then you can add your own zero waste finds too - it's only just started, it's really good and I recommend you check it out!

New favorite websites...

Here's what I've been surfing recently...

10:10 A campaign to get EVERYONE to cut their co2 emissions by 10% in 2010 - if you sign up they send you a monthly email telling you a different action you can do to save energy.

Green thing Tips on 7 ways to be greener - with videos and stories from others for inspiration

Incredible Edible Todmorden Todmorden is a town in Lancashire in England (near where my mum grew up!) and I LOVE LOVE LOVE that the town has taken charge of growing and campaigning for local food, check out their website - I'm so inspired!

Cut out and Keep Lots of craft tutorials - not all are eco friendly, but with a bit of imagination they could be!

Day Zero This website is helping me to focus on my goals for the next couple of years...you list 101 things you intend to do in the next 1001 days, then you can tick them off when you've done them...some of my things are eco, and some are just fun...I like to have a visual of what I'm planning to do and it really gives me some motivation to get them done! Does anyone else use this site?

Danda, from the wonderful blog Dandaworld, has drawn my attention to a law to extend the hunting period in her country (which is Italy - Que Bella!) and a petition you can sign to show your opposition to this - please see her blog post here and sign the petition here.

Open University Open Learn - Learn Stuff for Freeeee!

So, the unemployment drags on (really had enough now!) and to stop my brain turning into mush I've been taking some of the free online courses that the Open University offers on it's Open Learn website:

http://www.open.ac.uk/openlearn/home.php

I've been studying the module 'Global Warming' which so far has told me some of the ways scientists have used to work out that the temperature is rising - information which I imagine will be helpful when talking to those irritating people who insist that climate change doesn't exist! I'll be nice to be armed with some facts and knowledge. I think next I'm going to the modules on 'Health and Environment' and 'Ecology and Ecosystems'.

I liked....
1. It's freee!
2. There are lots of topics to choose from (languages, art, maths, law, history, science and lots more) and courses at different levels, from introductory to advanced.
3. It's online so there's no paper waste.
4. I'm on an introductory course and it's quite simple, I'm not very familiar with sciency terms (I haven't studied science since secondary school) and although I felt a bit offended at being instructed on how to read a graph that was only temporary, because some people might not remember how to read graphs.
5. It's a good way to get information for free, I can't afford the time or money to go back to uni and study (again!), and although these online courses aren't accredited to anything it's nice to gain some knowledge in areas I'm interested in.

I don't like that it's quite a boring way to learn - I'm not so good at the sitting and reading stuff on screen for so long, but I can cope if I try to do 20 minutes or so every few days, and there is a discussion forum (which I haven't used) if you want to make it more interactive. But overall I think it's a really good way to motivate yourself to learn new things (You register and then sign up for courses, you can take as long as you like to complete them, but for me the fact that I've started something means I'm more likely to finish it!) and a nice free resource.

Friends of the Earth Tip of the Day...

I've been a member of Friends of the Earth since I first started earning my own money (so when I was 16) and still think it's one of the most important things I'm a part of. When I (eventually) move I'm going to join the local action group and get properlly involved...but for now I'll stick to doing letter writing and online actions.

Friends of the Earth will send you an Eco Tip of the Day by email, usually really simple things that give you a bit of inspiration each day that a small action made by you can make a difference!

You can subscribe here...

New favorite websites...

I officially have been spending too much time on the internet!!!

But I have been finding lots of inspiration! I especially like....

The nag - sends you a cheerful 'nag' by email once a month to do something good, like switch your bank to a more ethical one, write to your favorite shop to ask them to sell guilt-free (is there such a thing?!) clothes or use reusable containers for your packed lunch. You can also browse through the site and read other nags and take part in them too. The site registers the details of the 'nags' you have participated in and uses it to calculate data - for example "Nag members have got 398 tupperware lunch boxes. That means they're probably throwing away about 41392 fewer bits of plastic lunch packaging a year" (quoted from thenag.net) so you can see the effect of your actions. Very extremely brilliant if you ask me!

My zero waste - does what it says on the tin really, lots of tips on how to live waste free. I'm quite smug in the knowledge that in our house we already do all the things suggested in the 'beginners tips for reducing waste' and the intermediate! And a few from the tips for recycling pros!

Instructables - tutorials posted by clever people, with photographs, to tell you how to make or do just about anything you wish - clothes, food, wooden stuff, metal stuff, garden stuff and I'm especially a fan of the green section!

Think I might turn the computer off for a while now!

Magazines...

I stopped buying magazines a couple of years ago...

I realised that the ones I was reading were full of boring celebrities, advertising and girls who all look the same and I didn't want to waste paper or pennies on them any more (except sometimes Dr Who Adventures when it has a reeaalllly good free gift or Sew Hip Magazine for the patterns).

946,430 billion magazines were sold in the UK last year!!

So instead I read online zines and blogs and communities, which have much more variety and no paper to recycle when I've finished reading.
