Garden visit, the allotments and polytunnels at CAT.

Garden visits is a (new) blog series where I visit gardens, then blog about them!

On our holidays we visited the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) in Machynlleth Wales.

There are several allotments and polytunnels at CAT, and they gave me serious garden envy.

Before you enter the Big Polytunnel there are some experimental raised beds to check out.  The round bed demonstrates different mulches and ground covers, from slate and plastic sheeting to oregano, wild strawberries and periwinkle. I love the cute little pond in the middle!

The Big Polytunnel is amazing, I really want a polytunnel but I don't have a big enough garden.  I would totally put one in the front garden, but sadly Joe isn't down with that.  The polytunnel at CAT has beautiful flowers, grapes, figs lots of crops and a pond.  It's lovely to hang out for a while and poke about, it's so big there's lots of room to wander round and it has natural ventilation from the slate beds below, so it's not too sticky and hot.

There are two allotments on site, the smaller of the two being the Whole Home Garden (part of an example of an eco friendly home).

The allotment is surrounded by these espaliered fruit trees and currant bushes.

There are lots of raised beds, as well as some areas with herbs and trees and flowers.  I think I could fit a little hoop tunnel like the one in this photo, over my front garden raised bed - it's not a polytunnel but it'll do a similar kind of job.

I really love these cobweb plant supports.

The conservatory of the Whole Home really inspired me to make the most of our conservatory.  I won't be growing a grape vine in there (not this year at least!) but I can definitely make room to grow more peppers and to try growing tomatoes in there this year.  I'd like some kind of citrus tree too.

The second allotment is a huge showcase of lots of organic growing methods.  Can I please draw your attention to the size of those leeks!

The allotment is fenced off by a living willow archway, fence and tunnel!

There are little details everywhere at CAT that show love and care for wildlife.  Piles of sticks are left all over the place for critters to live in, but this is a pretty impressive bug house with a herb planter on top.

Even the walls have insect habitat built in.

If you have a spare bath hanging around you could always turn it into a raised bed!  See the planting in the back bed, it's all good for pollinators and I was excited to see crimson clover because that's something I'm growing this year.

The nice man in the Small Polytunnel (so called by the CAT staff, but it seemed a very large polytunnel to me!)  let me have a wander through as well, although it was roasting hot in there so I didn't linger for much of a chat.  Look at all those little plants waiting to go out, there were so many courgettes and squashes and peppers, and so many tomatoes all the way down the middle.  I told you, serious polytunnel envy.

I went away from my visit to CAT totally inspired and empowered (and dreaming of winning the lottery and being able to have a much bigger garden!).  There's also a forest garden at CAT, but I'll show you that another time.

Have you been to CAT?  What did you think?

Street art, Digbeth.

Digbeth in Birmingham is home to lots of awesome street art and graffiti.  It's also home to a seasonal market with lots of yummy food, which is why I find myself wandering through there fairly often.

I love to see the new street art, and I always visit my old favourite (this huge, beautiful piece just through a gate on Floodgate Street).

These were my favourites this time, there was so much new stuff that I loved!

What do vegans eat, in Wales, Ceredigion and Powys.

When I tell people I'm vegan they always ask what I eat.  Here are some vegan meals and snacks I ate while on holiday in Wales.  We stayed in Aberdovey and went to Aberystwyth, both in the county of Ceredigion, and visited Macynlleth in Powys.

Bear of Amsterdam, Aberdovey.
We had our childhood holidays in Aberdovey, and mum always took me and my brother to the Bear of Amsterdam cafe as a special treat.  It's a cute little cafe where I had a simple but huuuge baked potato with beans.  I shared a side of chips with Joe and they were epic, best chips of the holiday!

Bay of Bengal, Aberdovey.
I only ate onion bhajis and popadoms from the Bay of Bengal Indian takeaway in Aberdovey, because I was feeling a bit full of food after eating out so much!  But they were both tasty and Joe's curry looked yummy too.

Lemon Sorbet, Aberdovey.
One of the ice cream shops in Aberdovey, I think it was The Fridge but I'm not sure, let me read the ingredients of their sorbets, they were suitable for vegans and I had a lemon one walking along the beach.  Yum.

Crimson Rhino, Aberystwyth.
I found Crimson Rhino, a veggie/vegan cafe on trip advisor when I was planning our holiday, and I was excited to try it.  We were going to have a drink and a snack, so I started with a vegan avocado whip chocolate muffin, real eat tomato and garlic quinoa chips and a lemonade, but the food looked so good going past us we stayed for lunch too!  I had falafels and patatas bravas.  Joe had a tofu burger and chips.  The falafel would have benefited from being in a wrap with salad, but the patatas were yummy and I tried a bit of Joe's burger and it was the best tofu I've tasted!  They had intriguing homemade vegan icecream too, but the only non-soya flavour was coconut salted caramel which I didn't fancy.

The Chip Box, Aberystwyth.
I went to uni in Aberystwyth and I always used to get my chips from the Chip Box, so I had to go back.  The chips are super yummy and I love that they come in cardboard boxes rather than polystyrene.

Lidl, Aberystwyth.
There's no supermarket in Aberdovey (only an expensive corner shop), so I was keen to buy some snacks in Aberystwyth.  There are loads of vegan options in Lidl, the popcorn and vegan orange chocolate were specially yummy.  We bought some broccoli, garlic and pasta too for a healthy homecooked meal one night.

The Quarry Cafe, Machynlleth.
I want to pack up the Quarry Cafe and take it home with me!  Everything is veggie or vegan, my food was delicious and it has pretty fairy lights and bunting!

The Coop, Machynlleth.
We visited the Coop in Macynthlleth for one thing and one thing only, vegan doughnuts

Tell me, have you eaten anything vegan and exciting on your holidays?

PS.  Check out what vegans eat in Birmingham, Brazil and at home too!

The last 2 photos are the side of the old Birmingham library building, it's currently being knocked down so this will probably be the last time I see it.

Hogwarts in the snow.

I went to the Warner Brothers Studio Tour of the Harry Potter sets last year, but I couldn't resist a return visit when I heard about Hogwarts in the snow!

What do vegans eat? Out in Birmingham.

People always ask me what do vegans eat, so here are some yummy vegan ideas, all from my nearest big city, Birmingham.

Vegan spiced noodles, Bhudda Belly. What do vegans eat? Out in Birmingham. secondhandsusie.blogspot.co.uk #ukveganblogger #birmingham

Seasonal markets in Digbeth.

Cute little Seasonal Markets, with craft stalls and food trucks are held seasonally at The Bond on Fazeley Street, Digbeth.  Lots of the food trucks have vegan options, this time I had spiced vegan noodles from Buddha Belly, a super-yummy chocolate cupcake from Cake Doctor and onion bhajis from Becky's Bhajis.  The noodles were the best I've ever tasted, and the bhajis were huge and came with delicious raita made from coconut cream.
Vegan potatoes and mushrooms, Birmingham Christmas Market. What do vegans eat? Out in Birmingham. secondhandsusie.blogspot.co.uk #ukveganblogger #birmingham

Onion bhaji wrap, Birmingham Christmas Market. What do vegans eat? Out in Birmingham. secondhandsusie.blogspot.co.uk #ukveganblogger #birmingham

Birmingham Frankfurt Christmas Market.

I seek out the same two stalls for vegan food every year at the Frankfurt Christmas Market.  The potato and mushroom stall (which is usually by the Council House) and the onion bhaji wrap stall (usually by the old library building) - try the yummy balti chips too!

Vegan mushroom fajita, Las Iguanas. What do vegans eat? Out in Birmingham. secondhandsusie.blogspot.co.uk #ukveganblogger #birmingham

Las Iguanas.

I Love Las Iguanas, in the Arcadian in Birmingham, and usually ask to go there for my birthday!  They have a special vegan menu, my favourite is the mushroom fajitas, the chips are really yummy too.  Sadly the cassava fries aren't the same as the aipim I ate lots of in Brazil, but they're tasty nonetheless.

Do you have any recommendations for vegan places to eat in Birmingham?

Birmingham Owl Trail, The Big Hoot.

We went to Birmingham last week, not realising that the city has been taken over by owls!

We didn't have an owl trail map, so we didn't get to see them all.
