I saw this picture while browsing on ebay and fell in love with it! This is called a memory jug, and is an american folk art idea, I've googled it a bit, but not found out too much, becuase I can't focus on reading stuff when I really want to start making one. I have all sorts of bits and bobs from my childhood that I was going to throw out, but not anymore! I just need to wait until the kitchen and bathroom get tiled in mums new house, then I can nick some grout and I'll be away! Until then I'm gathering my treasures and finding the perfect pot to cover (I'm thinking maybe a jam jar, but it needs to be the perfect shaped jam jar!) Have you ever seen one of these before? Aren't they awesome!?
Wow Sooz your header on you web looks AWESOME! I just LOVE the snail pic and the font... very very creative... I also find this post very intriguing... I've never seen this done before. What an awesome idea for the kids! They have all sorts of bits and bobs lying around! It looks pretty and you are recycling! Awesome stuff...
ReplyDeleteThanks Carolyn...I used piknik to make the header (have you heard of it, it's a free web tool to edit and add text etc to photos www.picnik.com it's very awesome...this was the first time I've used it and it was really easy!) The snail is my pet, Fluffy, the giant african land snail, I'll tell him you like his photo!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to start making my jar, although I think I'll be waiting a while to get my hands on some grouting stuff, I've made a little pile of things I want to use!
I'm going to have to google this, love the idea of using random childhood bits'n'pieces to make one. I have a lot of knicknacks that I can't bear to seperate with that would be perfect on a memory jug!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you like the idea Shannon Marie, I have lots of little bits I can't get rid of too, it would be nice to see them out in the open again!
ReplyDeleteGlad you like the idea Shannon Marie :)
ReplyDeleteAre they made with builder's grout applied to jugs? and is the grout coloured somehow? Tried to google it but I didn't see ones made as nicely as these. I agree would be a fantastic kids workshop - I would use waste plastics such as bottle tops etc
ReplyDeleteI think I read online that they were made from putty or clay, covering jars or jugs, but I don't really know what that is, I'm planning on using the kind of white grout that you use for putting up tiles (which I've used before to stick seashells to plant pots, so I think it'll work. you can change the colour of white grout by adding a little coloured paint to it too). I like the bottle top idea, you could make some very pretty patterns out of them! I think buttons would also look good.
ReplyDeletehttp://wasteam.co.uk/reuse-crafts/plastic-junk-jug/ Here's my version of the jug I made with plastic waste and trinkets around my house and stuck to the jug using grout. I ran out of grout so I didn't cover the whole surface :/
ReplyDeleteOh wow, thats really nice Joddle! I love that you used blue in your grout, it's really colourful! I'm still waiting for tiling to start in the new house so I can steal some grout!
ReplyDeleteThanks Sooz! The grout I used was old and quite lumpy but I kinda like how it's a bit rough round the edges.
ReplyDeleteI'm running a folk art jug mosiac workshop at the Urban Physic Garden London Bridge on July 30th if you could come?? I'd supply all the grout you could possibly need!
Oh wow, that sounds great...if only I lived nearer london!! :(
ReplyDeleteMy grandmother made many of these back in the sixties; she used empty liquor bottles and the items were attached with some sort of epoxy that she pressed the trinkets into. I'm trying to work on one now and haven't hit on the right product. Curious if you ever did this project; I know this post is five years old!
ReplyDeleteHi, sorry I never did try this, I remember making something similar sticking shells to plant pots when I was little, I think we used some kind of tile grout that came in a powder and you mixed it with water.
DeleteGood luck, I hope you have success! :D
