Rag Rug Progress and a How To Video.

So, when I posted last time about my rag rug a couple of people asked how it was made, so I thought I'd make a how to make rag rug video to show you.

I hope it's clear, I'm not sure if I explained some things properly, so if it's confusing let me know and I'll have another go. Also sorry for the out of focus bits, my camera wasn't friends with taking a video close up, this was my 3rd attempt and it's still not how I'd like it to be...sigh...

My camera ran out of battery before I finished showing you everything, so here are some extra photos of my rug so far.

  1. Yeah! An update! I'm so into this rag rug thing that you showed me that I can't wait to start. But I know absolutely 0 about it. So this is really useful. I see there are quite a few different ways of creating a rag rug... but your version seems fairly easy for a beginner like me. I think your rug is going to look super gorgeous! Can't wait to see the completed version! ;-) And a very cute video too. Thanks for that Sooz.

  2. Thanks Carolyn, I'm glad it was helpful :) I think this looks like the easiest way to make a rag rug, the tool was the most expensive (about £15, when I've seen other types for around £5, but then I figured £15 is what I got paid for 2 hours work, and the tool is nice, so what the heck!) I did even more rag-rugging last night and have reached the first bumpy bit of the heart! I can't wait to get it finished now!

  3. It looks great! Thanks for the video, it made it so easier to understand what it involves. but I was surprised you didn't have to tie the rags. They don't fall out? Would the rug be washable?

I'm planning to make one using an old roll of calico i've had lying around for years.

  4. Thanks Tricia...The rags won't fall out, becuase the hessian hold them in place, I'm not sure why, they'll pull out but they don't fall out by themselves...magic! I'm not sure if it'll be washable, it's quite heavy so if I did wash it it would take a long time to dry, and I'm not sure if it would fall apart in the machine, I'm planning on shaking mine regualarly and hoovering it and hoping I don't need to wash it!

  5. Hi, saw your rag rug video on you tube. It's fantastic and I can't wait to start a project. Quick question how wide and long are the strips of fabric? How much fabric do you need? Does the hessian need to be a particular type? Best wishes Kerry

    1. Hi Kerry! Glad you like my video (I can never believe people are still watching it!)

The fabric strips I use are about an inch wide and maybe 2 and a half inches long, I use a cutting thingy so they're all the same length (like this one http://www.iriss.co.uk/product.php?xProd=221 ) It takes a LOT of fabric, I'm still working on the rug in that video, which is only a couple of feet wide, and so far I've used about 5 nighties and 7 t-shirts, I'm not leaving much room in between rags though, I've seen other rugs where there rags are more spaced out, but putting them closer makes the rug nice and thick, which I prefer.

You can use any sort of hessian, I think it comes in different weights, mines about medium, I bought it from a garden shop on ebay (like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HESSIAN-FABRIC-METRE-JUTE-SACK-FABRIC-1-37m-Wide-/190605223911?pt=UK_Home_Garden_Garden_Plants_Weed_Pest_Control_CV&hash=item2c60f4e7e7

hope that helps! Happy rug making! :) xx
