Christmas at home.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.  Well, it is at mine anyway!  I can never resist getting my Christmas decs out early so I can bask in the glow of fairy lights on dark December days.  We've gone for a different set up this year, with little trees instead of the big one, but our traditional Christmas tat is out too!  Here's a little peek,

For Christmas, pretty Gisela Gottschlich illustrations.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Here are some gorgeous retro Christmas illustrations to look at and say 'oooh' and 'aaaah', they're from 'My Big Christmas Book' and I think most of the illustrations are by Gisela Gottschlich.

Ways to be kind, to give and to do good this Christmas.

Ways to be kind, to give and to do good this Christmas. From secondhandsusie.blogspot.com UK Blogger

It's nearly Christmas and I've bought my fair share of presents, but there are other, more important ways to give during the festive season, for a happier, kinder world.  Here are some of them.

Give money to charity.
This is the effort free option to give at Christmas, (if you have some spare cash that is!).  So many charities have websites that make it super easy to donate.  In general my personal favourite eco friendly charities are Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace and I like the Dr Hadwen Trust who fund non-animal medical research.

If you're concerned about what's happening in the world right now then here are some more causes to spare some pennies for,

Planned parenthood (in light of the not so pro-choice business going on in America thanks to Trump and Pence).

For charities helping Aleppo check out these lists, from The Independent and Huffpost, and if you want to know why you should donate to help people in Aleppo watch this (warning it's very distressing).

So many elderly people are alone at Christmas, donate to Age UK, who provide lots of services for elderly people.

Your local wildlife refuge will be busy this winter looking after lots of hedgehogs and other beasties, I'm sure they'd appreciate a donation.  My local wildlife rescue is Cuan House and they do great work.

Give kindness.
Simple things like offering to help someone with a buggy up the stairs, holding the door or making way for the person using a wheelchair can brighten someone's day and make a little difference.

Donate your belongings.
There's an idea of a reverse advent calendar going round at the moment, put an item to donate to a charity shop or food bank into a box every day during advent then donate it at the end.  Or you can go the old fashioned route and go through your wardrobe and discard anything that doesn't bring you joy!   I've taken several bags to my favourite local charity shop (it raises money for the day centre my Grandparent's used), I even gave them the bag of 'good stuff' I was saving to E-bay, because lets face it they've been hanging round for 6 months and I'm never going to get round to it!

Buy second hand.
Pick up decorations or Christmas party frocks from charity shops or Ebay, it saves you money and reuses resources.

Give to food or toy banks.
In my area there are collections for both food and toy banks, by the local council and charities.  There are food bank collection bins in loads of supermarkets, so it's super easy to pick up a tin of soup to pop in while you're doing your shopping.  I don't tend to buy toys for the toy bank (too plasticy, my neices are getting nice cotton kitty-cat socks for Christmas this year!) and gifts need to be new, but I have a couple of new craft books I've never, ever read that I plan to donate.  The toy bank caters for young adults as well as little ones, and they're often short of gifts to give them, so it's a perfect opportunity to regift those brand new drawing books, plus some new ones, to a better home.

Shop local this Christmas.
Try to buy some presents or Christmas food supplies from your local market or shops.  Spending within your local economy means more money stays in your area and gets reinvested in more local jobs and services, and it makes your local business owners happy.

Give Compliments.
So far I've told the lady in the wool shop I love her window display (knitted 12 days of Christmas), several library customers I like their Christmas jumpers and one of my Rainbow guides that she has good dance moves.  I plan on giving at least 10 random compliments before Christmas comes.  You can do this really easily on social media too.  Just scroll through your Instagram or Facebook feed and spread the love to your online friends.

What will you be giving this Christmas?

Merry Christmas, happy new year and #25 festive days.

I hope you all had a very merry Christmas!

I took part in a photo challenge on Instagram over the festive period.  Angela set a Christmas-sy theme for each day then we all tagged our photos with #25festivedays, it was really nice to collect my own festive photos and see everyone elses.

These are my photos,

On Christmas day my Joe asked me to marry him, with a beautiful golden daisy ring, I said yes, in the running for our official engagement photo is the one above (the only photo taken of us that day!) of me wearing a child's hat and Joe headbutting my back like a friendly cat.  I think it sums us up pretty well.

I hope you enjoy the end of the year, and that 2016 brings you many happy, lovely and sparkly moments!

Thanks so much for reading and for being my friends in 2015 xxx

Christmas cards and crafts.

I haven't made many Christmas presents this year, only a couple of hair clips for my nieces and a brooch for me.

I'm quite pleased with them though!  I made this kitsch deer brooch for myself to make my work uniform prettier.

I made a few Christmas cards, mainly for family members, using cute toadstool paper, 'Merry Christmas' washi tape and more deer buttons.

Make one small change - ditch the wrapping paper.

Adopting eco friendly habits can be easier taken one small step at a time.  Lots of small changes add up to a big difference.

An easy change you can make in time for Christmas is to ditch shop bought wrapping paper.  There are tonnes of ideas for alternatives to be found online, from making origami boxes to using your kid's artwork.

I like to keep it simple, so I use newspaper or fabric to wrap my presents.  The UK uses 83 million square metres of wrapping paper each Christmas, so it makes sense to recycle that newspaper or use that old scarf to wrap your gifts.

How do you wrap your Christmas presents?

Hogwarts in the snow.

I went to the Warner Brothers Studio Tour of the Harry Potter sets last year, but I couldn't resist a return visit when I heard about Hogwarts in the snow!

Christmas Crochet...Snowflakes, Cowl, Hand Warmers and Elf Baby Hat...

I started off being really organised with my Christmas crochet and began work in November.  However, I still found myself madly crocheting on Christmas eve! Anyway, here's what I made...

I made a couple of cotton crochet snowflakes using the lovely, easy, free pattern on Attic 24, for the ladies I do Rainbow Guides with.

I made a crochet cowl for my mum, using this free crochet pattern.  I did it in turquoises and blues to match with her new teal coat.

My brother, sister in law and got crochet hand warmers, I used this free hand warmer pattern I found on Ravelry.  I used a big hook and 2 strands of wool held together, so they worked up really quickly and are thick and warm.

Finally, I made an elf hat for my little niece, she is 5 months old now.  I used this free pattern for an elf hat, but made it using DK and a 4mm hook, crocheted in a spiral rather than in rows, and used htr (uk) instead of dc (usa) - so it's a loose interpretation!  I wound the end of the hat into a spiral and sewed it together (you can see that in the second photo, I finished this hat at mums house on Christmas eve!) instead of using a pompom.  I think it turned out pretty cute.  I used some yarn called 'James C. Brett Baby Marble', which is the only yarn I actually bought for all these projects, the rest was from my stash!

Phew!  Did you make any Christmas gifts this year?

Christmas Cards...

I always make my own Christmas cards, although I was a little late this year, posted them on Christmas Eve and crossed my fingers!

I kept it simple this year, just card blanks with what are supposed to be paper chains stuck on.  The paper chains are from an Usbourne book called Decorations to Cut, Fold and Stick.  I just cut out along the lines then stuck them to my cards.  I also decorated the envelopes, 'cos I was feeling fancy!

I usually do something a little more elaborate, but I decided to be kind to myself this year, I have been super busy so needed something quick and easy.

My mum got this special creation, I made it at Rainbows!  Lucky her!
